How to Install DiPlay on BYD and Other Android Head Units
Prepare while parked
- Check the car model/year, DiLink, Android and firmware versions in the head unit’s system information.
- Download the official APK from the project’s GitHub releases and install it using the method supported by your car. Installation restrictions depend on the car’s firmware.
- Open DiPlay and allow the permissions it requests for the features you use. Bluetooth/Nearby devices and Wi-Fi/Location support connection; microphone access is for Siri and calls, and notifications provide connection controls.
- Close other phone-projection apps. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your iPhone, then pair it in the car’s Bluetooth settings.
Make the first connection
Built-in car hotspot is the default. Turn it on, preferably at 5 GHz, and save its exact name and password in Settings → Connection setup. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on, pair the iPhone with the car, then tap Connect phone and accept the CarPlay prompt. If the phone does not join automatically, try joining the car hotspot manually.
Wi-Fi Direct is another wireless option on Android 9 or later, if the car’s firmware supports it. Select it in Connection setup. If it cannot connect reliably, try the built-in car hotspot. On Android 9, the app cannot check whether the chosen channel was actually used.
Existing Wi-Fi / Same LAN: first connect the car and iPhone to the same router or portable Wi-Fi in their system settings, then save the network name and password in DiPlay. Keep Bluetooth on. Use WPA2 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode and disable client isolation so the devices can communicate. DiPlay does not join the network for you.
USB: use a data-capable cable and a USB data port, choose Connect with USB, and accept Android USB access and the iPhone’s Trust/CarPlay prompts. Allow the local VPN if requested; it carries the USB connection and is not an internet VPN service. Basic CarPlay does not require ADB, though your car may require it to install apps.
Check that everything works
Start with 30 fps, HEVC off and Default icon/text size. If the picture stutters, try 80% or 60% resolution. During a connection, confirm display changes with Apply and reconnect; when disconnected, save them for the next connection.
Check picture, touch, music, navigation voice, Siri and calls separately. Seeing the CarPlay home screen does not confirm that every feature works.
If Android says “There was a problem parsing the package”, the failure happened during installation. Check Android 9 or later, the official APK filename, a complete download and whether the car permits APK installation. Issue #113 contains this error but no confirmed cause or fix.
If automatic startup fails, open DiPlay manually first. Check the separate settings for opening after the car starts and connecting when the app opens, plus the car’s background permissions. In #118, the Qin owner later reported that a newer version resolved the problem; the exact version and full setup were not supplied, so this does not confirm a fix for every Qin.
Updating and reporting a problem
Install the official APK over the existing app to retain settings and pairing. It must be the same package with a matching signature; the 0.2.13 signature matches 0.2.12. If Android refuses the update, check which build is installed and save any reports you need before uninstalling.
If a problem remains, try it on 0.2.13 and save a fresh report through Settings → Diagnostics → Save diagnostic report.
Android 10 or later normally saves to Downloads/DiPlay; Android 9 asks you to choose a location. If saving there fails, use the location shown by the app or View report/Share.
For startup problems, restart the head unit and then open DiPlay manually to export the report. Include the car/firmware, Android, iPhone/iOS, connection method, steps and failure time. Review the report before sending it and leave out the hotspot password. Nothing is uploaded automatically.
What changed in 0.2.13
Wi-Fi Direct is now available on some Android 9 head units. Support still depends on the firmware, and Android 9 cannot verify the chosen channel. USB switching and several connection errors are also improved; these changes do not resolve every black-screen problem.
You can switch the CarPlay dock between the driver’s side and bottom without reconnecting. Switching to or from Automatic still reconnects. Optional rotation and split-screen settings can increase the work needed to display video. Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) is added to the app.
The side panel, buffered music and DiLink 3 call controls are optional experiments, off by default. Read their requirements before enabling them. Upstream has not reported a new vehicle test covering the complete final 0.2.13 release.
What changed in 0.2.12
Adds Existing Wi-Fi / Same LAN, so the car and iPhone can use the same external Wi-Fi network.
Improves USB device detection, split-screen display and touch alignment. Resolution can be set from 30% to 160%; if the head unit cannot handle enlargement, the app falls back to 100% and shows a notice.
Adds View report and Share when the usual report-saving method fails. This helps export logs; it does not by itself fix startup problems.
What changed in 0.2.11
The settings swipe can use two, three or four fingers; three is the default. Devices without a touchscreen gain directional-pad and remote navigation.
Adds optional automatic startup of the car’s built-in hotspot, off by default. It requires supported BYD firmware and already-authorized local ADB. It keeps the hotspot name and password; opening DiPlay at startup and connecting on open remain separate settings.
What changed in 0.2.10
Fixes some USB connection errors and lets wired connections proceed without completing Manual hotspot setup.
